There are some interior design choices that divide opinion, and one of the most debated has to be the humble bathroom carpet.

For years, the traditional bathroom idea of using carpet in bathrooms has been considered a definite interior design “no”. The usual concerns are obvious - moisture, spills, hygiene, and the fear of stepping onto a damp carpet after a bath or shower.

But is a carpeted bathroom really as impractical as we have always believed?

Recently, while browsing beautiful traditional home interiors, I came across several bathrooms featuring soft, luxurious carpets. Instead of looking outdated, they appeared warm, elegant, and incredibly inviting — the kind of bathroom that makes you want to run a deep bath, light a candle, and settle in for a little relaxation.

And I have to admit… I was rather drawn to them.

Creating a Warm and Cosy Bathroom

Modern bathroom design often focuses on sleek tiles, hard surfaces, and minimalist finishes. While this can look beautiful, it can sometimes feel cold and clinical.

A traditional bathroom takes a different approach by introducing warmth through:

• Warm colour palettes

• Characterful furniture and accessories

A carefully chosen carpet can add softness underfoot and help transform a bathroom into a more comfortable and relaxing space.

Are Bathroom Carpets Actually Practical?

Of course, there are practical considerations.

A carpeted bathroom probably wouldn’t be the best choice for a busy family bathroom with young children, bath toys, and plenty of enthusiastic splashing! However, in a grown-up household where care is taken, could it work?

With modern carpets designed for durability, regular vacuuming, good ventilation, and sensible use, perhaps the idea is not quite as outrageous as we once thought.

After all, we use rugs, upholstered furniture, curtains, and other soft furnishings throughout our homes without hesitation. Perhaps the bathroom deserves a little more warmth and comfort too.

Ultimately, creating a home you love is about choosing designs that suit your lifestyle. Trends come and go, but timeless interiors are often the ones that reflect personality rather than simply following rules.

A traditional bathroom with warm tones, natural textures, and carefully chosen details can create a wonderfully calming space - one that feels more like a room to enjoy rather than just a practical area of the home.

I’m not sure I’m quite brave enough to install a carpet in my own bathroom just yet, but I have to admit… those cosy traditional bathrooms have certainly made me think twice!
