An Island Built Around Your Kitchen
Most kitchen islands are sold as a fixed box and the room has to work around them. We do it the other way round. We measure your space, talk through how you actually use the kitchen, and build to suit. You choose the length, the depth, the overhang, the number of drawers and cupboards, and where the power goes.
A breakfast bar island needs a worktop overhang of around 12 inches so stools tuck under properly and knees aren't jammed against the carcass. A prep island can be deeper and squarer, with more storage below and a full working surface on top. Plenty of kitchens want both, so we'll design one end for seating and the other for cooking.
Allow at least 3ft of clear floor between the island and your surrounding units so two people can pass and appliance doors open fully. Anything tighter and the island starts working against you.
Timber, Finish and Fitted Cabinetry
Reclaimed pine gives you the character, the knots and the softer, lived-in look that suits a country or farmhouse kitchen. Solid oak gives you a harder-wearing, heavier and more formal finish that sits well in a shaker or contemporary scheme. We'll show you samples before anything is cut, and match the island to your existing cabinetry, worktops and handles.
