When choosing a dining table, size is one of the most important factors to get right. A table that’s too large can overwhelm a space, while one that’s too small won’t comfortably seat your family or guests.

As a general rule, you should allow at least 90cm of clearance around your dining table so people can move freely. For seating, each person typically needs around 60cm of table width. This means a 180cm table will comfortably seat six people, while a 240cm table is better suited for eight.

For smaller kitchens or compact dining areas, a narrow or shorter table can make a big difference. In larger, open-plan spaces, a substantial farmhouse dining table can act as a focal point and bring the room together.
